Mariners Updates

By: Willem K.

Hello! Sportswriter Willem Kohn here to give you a midseason update on the Seattle Mariners. Standing on top of the American League West with a record of 42-31, they have a winning percentage of .575 and are 11 games above five hundred. The M’s have a good chance to win their division and make the postseason, though not in the way you would think. If Seattle wins their division, it would be because the other teams in the American League West division are not having a great year. Besides the Mariners, the four other teams (Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics and Houston Astros) have losing records; the average winning percentage for the other teams is .422, meaning they haven't even won half of their games.

Seattle pitching has been lights out this season, despite several injuries. If you only score 3 to 4 runs every game, you need good pitching and defense. Mariners starting pitchers lead the nation in quality starts with 44 in 72 games. 36 days ago, starter Bryan Woo returned to the big leagues after being out several games due to right medial elbow inflammation. Since then, Woo has started six games, and thrown 33 and 2/3 innings. In that time, he racked up 24 strikeouts, 4 quality starts, three wins, with a WHIP of 0.53 and ERA of 1.07.

At their current pace, the Mariners are on track to win 93 games out of 162, which was enough to win the West last year. So don’t count the Mariners out this season, no matter how mediocre you might think they are.
