Blue Highway Games Interview

Russell G.

An interview with Jordan, an employee at Blue Highway Games.

Q: Why did you choose to work at Blue Highway Games?

A: Two very simple answers to that question. I am the brother of one of the owners, so it was very easy to make the decision to be employed by a family member. But also, I really love board games. I grew up playing them; I had my first cup of coffee as a kid here.

Q: What is your favorite game?

A: The Grizzled, a World War One anti-war game.

Q: What are some game recommendations for kids in grades K-2?

A: Trash Pandas. You are a raccoon trying to get the best trash.

Q: What are some game recommendations for kids in grades 3-5?

A: 5 Minute Dungeon. 1: It is cooperative and 2: it takes 5 minutes to play.

Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Blue Highway?

A: Getting paid to play games.

Q: What is your least favorite thing at Blue Highway?

A: There's not a huge number of downsides but during the holidays there are huge lines, and it is kind of physically draining.

Q: If you had to work somewhere else not for Blue Highway, where would it be?

A: I would do woodworking. I was pursuing that before I started my job at Blue Highway, and I might go back to doing that; my dad also does woodworking for his job.

Q: Do you have a favorite story from your time working at Blue Highway? If so, what?

A: Customers are always nice. Every October there are little dice you can roll and if you get snake eyes you get 10% off. A dad and his kids [rolled snake eyes] and that was fun!

Q: Is there a favorite time of day you enjoy at the store?

A: The last hour to hour and a half.

Q: Is there a general favorite game among the workers?

A: Root and The Taverns of Tiefenthal.

Q: Is there a general least favorite game among the workers?

A: Monopoly. [The game idea] was stolen from a woman who was trying to show the downsides of capitalism and the upside of socialism.

Q: What game do people purchase the most?

A: Cascadia. It’s a locally-made game.

Q: What items do people purchase the most?

A: Magic the Gathering.

Q: What are some upcoming events for kids at Blue Highway?

A: Monthly game nights. If you play a game, you get 20% off a children's game or puzzle (see the schedule at the store). And trick or treating!
