Microwave Cookery

Lucy H.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to cook or bake but your parents were too busy to help you with it? Or did you want to make a super fast egg for breakfast so you can sleep in more? Or do you look at pie pictures wishing to make them appear? The microwave is your answer! Everything you want to know about microwave cooking is right here!

But first I will tell you how I started microwave cooking and where I got all the recipes. It began when I was looking at a pie picture followed by a recipe that took a long time and included the stove. Not that I don’t know how to use the stove, but the rule is in our family, a grown up must be around. I wanted to make it myself, so I came up with the best idea, a recipe that I could make food and sweets that used the microwave! I spied on my Dada and saw him using ChatGPT – a computer program – to find a recipe. I still remember the words writing super fast each part of the recipe. My Dada suggested that I try asking ChatGPT for recipes that I could cook in the microwave. That’s how I got the pie and the lava cake recipe. My Dada also suggested a microwave egg recipe from Jose Andres, a famous chef.

These recipes are a great place to start – not too easy but not too hard! I recommend trying the microwave egg first. And watch it rise in the microwave and start to steam. Then take it out, and just like that, you have a microwave egg!

Before you start, three things. First - no metal or tin foil in the microwave. Second, do not make a recipe if you are allergic to something. Third, don’t pack the flour into the measuring cup.

Jose Andres Microwave Omelette

Ingredients

1 egg

1 tablespoon mayonnaise

1 bowl

1 plate

1 whisk or fork

Instructions

Whisk eggs and mayonnaise together. Pour into a microwave-safe greased bowl. Microwave for 40 seconds. Watch as it rises with steam and slowly comes down! Flip on to a plate and top with freshly shredded cheese and chopped chives. (If you don’t want to add chives or cheese then you can skip it or add something else.)

Microwave Pie

Ingredients (for a 9-inch microwave-safe dish)

1 cup flour

4 tablespoons butter (softened) or oil

2 tablespoons sugar (optional, for a sweet pie)

4–6 tablespoons water or milk

Filling:

2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries 🫐

2–3 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste)

1 teaspoon cornstarch (to thicken, optional but helps)

1 squeeze of lemon juice (optional, makes it tangy)

Directions

In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, and butter/oil with a fork or hands. Add water/milk slowly until you get a soft dough (like playdough).

Press most of the dough into the bottom and sides of a microwave-safe pie dish. Save a little dough for the top.

Spoon in your fruit or savory filling. Spread it evenly.

Flatten leftover dough into pieces and place on top (like patches or strips). Cook on medium power for about 15 minutes, but you can add more time if it looks a little bit raw. Check about every 5 minutes in case the pie is steaming and hot and bubbly. The crust should look set and the filling hot and bubbly.

The pie might not seem cooked because the microwave does make the pie seem golden. The microwave makes it seem raw, but it is really cooked!

Let it rest 5 minutes (so it firms up a bit). Slice and serve warm!

🍫 Microwave Molten Lava Cake (1 mug cake)

Ingredients

    •    4 tablespoons flour

    •    3 tablespoons sugar

    •    2 tablespoons cocoa powder

    •    1 pinch of salt

    •    3 tablespoons milk

    •    2 tablespoons melted butter (or oil)

    •    1 teaspoon vanilla

    •    1 tablespoon chocolate chips OR 1 small square of chocolate (this makes the lava!)

Instructions

    1.    Get a microwave-safe mug (normal coffee mug).

    2.    Add the flour, sugar, cocoa, and salt. Stir well.

    3.    Add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.

    4.    Put chocolate chips or a chocolate square right in the middle.

Do NOT stir it in — this is your lava center!

    5.    Microwave for 35–45 seconds.

    •    The top should look set but still a little soft.

    6.    Let it cool for 1 minute, so you don’t burn your tongue.

    7.    Dig in and enjoy the gooey chocolate lava!
