The 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics

The 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics are over, but the memories of it
will last forever! USA truly crushed it at the Olympics. After the two weeks
were over USA landed in 2nd place for medals with 33 medals 12 of which
were gold, right after Norway. And who earned that gold you ask?
Well, Alyssa Liu, the women’s hockey team, and the men’s hockey team!
US figure skater, Alyssa Liu, earned 1 individual and 1 team gold
medal. In the short program Alyssa landed in 3rd place right after two
Japanese figure skaters. At the free skate Alyssa delivered a stunning
performance that deserved the standing ovation. After winning gold Alyssa
later said “I was peak happiness when I was out there on the ice.”
Then, of course, there was the US women's hockey team. The US
faced their longtime rivals Team Canada. They faced them in the gold
medal game and won, 2-1 in overtime. Canada was leading the game 1-0
until there was 2 minutes left in the gold medal game. Then Laila Edwards,
the first Black American hockey player in history to win gold, shot the puck,
and the Captain Hilary Knight, who was playing in her fifth Olympics, tipped
it in. The game went to sudden death overtime. Just four minutes in, Team
USA’s Megan Keller scored the golden goal to win the game and clinch
gold!
And last but not least, the US men’s hockey team. In the gold medal
game USA faced Team Canada. The game took place on the exact date of
the 1980 Olympic team’s upset of the Soviet Union in the game that is
known as the “Miracle on Ice” and became the movie “Miracle” which I
deeply recommend if you haven’t watched it. All the players on this year’s
US and Canada hockey teams were NHL stars. Canada dominated the
game with 42 shots but US goaltender Conner Hellebuyck made 41 saves
to keep his team in the game. Jack Hughes scored the golden goal about
two minutes into the sudden death overtime with chipped and missing
teeth!
Wow! USA really did crush it at the Olympics. 12 gold? Now that’s a
lot. Alyssa Liu, US men’s and US women’s hockey are stars at the
Olympics, but do you want to know another star of the Olympics? Yes?
Well, during a cross country skiing race, a local wolfdog escaped his
doghouse and ended up on the race course. He crossed the finish line as if
he were a competitor! That goes to show you how awesome the Winter
Olympics are! There are some expected stars and some not so expected
stars.
