Interview With Ms. Gunsolus
Jackson A.

Ms. Gunsolus was my fourth-grade teacher. She is the best, and I think that she is a very interesting person, so I want to share a little bit about her with you.
Q. How long have you been teaching for?
I’ve been teaching at Seattle Public schools for over 25 years but before that I taught English in Japan.
Q. Did you teach anywhere before Coe?
Yes, in Seattle I've taught at Hawthorne Elementary, Roxhill Elementary, and John Hay Elementary. I’ve also taught English in Japan.
Q. What is your favorite subject to teach?
Reading, math and social studies are my favorite subjects to teach.
Q. What made you want to become a teacher?
I come from a family of teachers, but I was convinced I didn’t want to become a teacher until I taught English in Japan and realized I loved teaching.
Q. Outside of school what is your favorite activity?
Some of my favorite things are making and eating big meals with family and friends, hiking, running, gardening, playing the piano, and I’m learning French. Currently I am obsessed with a new long distance hiking trail in France called the Hexatrek.
Q. Do you have any pets, if so, how many?
We have two funny cats. Their names are Otis and Rosie. We had a chocolate lab for fourteen years and we still miss her every day.
Q. What was your dream job?
Teaching really is my dream job. I am so lucky to spend every day with kids!
Q. Who is someone who inspires you, and why?
My father was a huge inspiration to me. He made deep connections with people as a teacher and a coach. He made a lasting impression on a lot of people, and I was always amazed at how many of his former students and athletes would still visit him when he was in his 80’s and 90’s.
Q. Who is your favorite author?
Anthony Doerr and Amor Towles are two of my favorite authors. They are both really inspiring to hear talk as well. Of course, I also love to read the latest books my students are reading.
Q. What made you want to teach at Coe?
I’ve lived in the neighborhood for over thirty years. I wanted to teach in a school where I could walk to school and see my students in the neighborhood. My three children went to Coe, and I knew right away it was the community I wanted to teach in. My children are now in their 20’s and all are still good friends with many people they met at Coe. It really is an extra special place. I’m so lucky to have spent so many years teaching at this incredible school.
